Check-in notes for guests arriving by tram

Most guest lockouts start with instructions written for someone who already knows the building. How to write check-in notes that take a guest from the tram stop to the right gate, the right door and the right key.

In November 2025 El Campello had 1,006 registered tourist lets. Each of them welcomes strangers who have never seen the street, the building or the door, often late, tired and carrying suitcases. And since February 2025 the tram runs four times an hour between Alicante and El Campello, so some of those guests will arrive on foot from a stop.

Most of the guest lockouts a host hears about at midnight could have been prevented by the check-in message. Here is how to write one that works.

Start from the tram stop, not the address

A satnav address is fine for a taxi. A guest on foot needs a route.

  • Name the stop, exactly as it appears on the tram: Muchavista, Fabraquer, Pla Barraques, El Campello, Poble Espanyol, Amerador, Cala Piteres, Coveta Fumà, Venta Lanuza…
  • Say which way to walk out of the stop, with something they cannot miss: towards the sea, uphill, past a particular shop.
  • Give the walking time honestly, and mention steps or a steep slope if there is one. Suitcases matter.

Then every door, in order

Most lets have at least two locks between the street and the bed, and some have four. List them in the order the guest will meet them:

  1. The gate of the residencial or the portal of the block, with how it opens: key, code or intercom.
  2. Any second gate: the garden, the pool area, the lift lobby.
  3. The flat door, with its floor and letter or number.
  4. Anything else: a terrace door that needs the handle lifted before it slides, a storeroom.

Add one photo of each door. A photo of the portal from the street is worth more than a paragraph.

The keys themselves

  • Say which key is which, ideally with coloured caps, and say so in the message: “blue for the portal, red for the flat”.
  • If you use a key box, give its exact position with a photo, the code, and how to close it again. Boxes near the sea can seize; test yours before the season.
  • If you use a smart lock, say what to do if the keypad stays dark, and keep the mechanical override somewhere you can reach.

The plan B, written down

Every message should end with what to do if something goes wrong:

  • Your number, or your manager’s, and the hours you answer.
  • What not to do: no forcing the door, no climbing to a terrace.
  • The fact that a locksmith will only open the door once you confirm the booking, so the guest knows to expect a call to you.

Talk to the community first

The portal and the pool gate belong to the community, not to you. If you need extra communal keys, or want something fitted to a shared door, it goes through the president or the administrador, as explained in the residencial gate lock: owner, president or administrador? And for a guest who is already standing at a stop at night without keys, there is off the last tram at Coveta Fumà with no keys.
