# Locked out on the school run to Villa Marco

The door clicked shut behind you on the way to school, and the keys are on the hall table. How a latched door is opened, why it is usually quick, and three habits that stop it happening twice.

The French Lycée of Alicante has been in El Campello since 2005, on a 20-hectare campus at Villa Marco, with more than 1,300 pupils from nursery to the baccalaureate. Add the other schools in the town and a lot of front doors close at the same rushed moment every weekday morning: bags, lunches, a missing shoe, and a door pulled to with the keys still inside.

Back from the school gate, the door will not open. It happens to everyone once.

## The good news: a latched door

Most of these doors were **pulled shut, not locked**. The key was never turned, so the only thing holding the door is the latch, the sloped bolt that clicks into the frame.

That is the easiest kind of door to open without damage. A thin, flexible tool is slid between the door and the frame to draw the latch back, and the door opens with no mark on it and the lock untouched. On many doors it takes a few minutes once someone is there.

It gets slower if:

- **The door has a strong anti-slip guard** over the gap at the latch, as many reinforced doors do.
- **The door has dropped or swollen**, so it is tight in the frame.
- **It was locked with the key after all**, perhaps by someone else leaving later. Then the cylinder itself has to be opened.

## Two minutes before you phone anyone

1. **Try every other door**: the garage, the terrace, a back door. Sometimes one was simply left open.
2. **Think of spare keys**: a partner at work, a neighbour, a grandparent, a cleaner.
3. **Check the time** you need to be somewhere, and say so on the phone.

When you call, say whether the key was turned or the door was only pulled shut. It changes what is brought and how long it takes. You will be asked for something that ties you to the address, an ID or padrón certificate, a rental contract or a neighbour who knows you, and if it is all inside, you show it once the door is open, before anyone goes in.

## Three habits that stop it happening again

- **Keys live by the door, not in the kitchen**: a hook or bowl right where you put your shoes on.
- **A spare with someone who lives close**, not with someone in another town.
- **If the door locks itself every time it shuts**, as some do, think about whether you want that. A lock that latches automatically is a fine security feature and a common cause of morning lockouts. The cylinder or the lock can be changed for one that suits the way your household leaves the house.
